How to find the LASIK doctor who is best for you

If you’re considering a LASIK procedure on your eyes, then you don’t want to take any chances that something could go wrong.  As part of your due diligence in looking into eye surgery, you also need to decide who the best doctor is that can perform your LASIK surgery.

Here are some things to consider:

Is your doctor appropriately licensed?  Check the surgeon’s licenses through the National Practitioner Data Bank or validate the surgeon’s credentials through your state’s licensing board.

Does your doctor have board certification?  Ask your doctor if he/she is certified beyond having a basic license.  This means they are certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology to practice in a specialty area of medicine, such as performing LASIK procedures.

Is your doctor a member of the American College of Surgeons?  ACS members require that doctors be board certified and that they follow ethical standards of conduct.  Look for the designation “FACS” after a doctor’s name which means they are members of the Fellows of American College Surgeons.

Ask for referrals from your regular eye doctor.  Credentials aside, one of the best ways to find the best LASIK surgeon is to ask for a referral from somebody you trust, whether it is your own eye doctor or from somebody who has already had a LASIK procedure.

Go online to find a qualified surgeon.  The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery have surgeon directories on their websites.  These sites can also provide you with other useful information regarding LASIK and other important information regarding your eyes.
